Busting the Myths: What they don’t tell you about the Climate Crisis

At UNMODA, we believe that awareness is the first step toward meaningful action. As conversations around climate change become more urgent, they are also becoming more clouded by misinformation, outdated narratives, and greenwashed promises. This blog is our attempt to clarify, simplify and dismantle some of the most persistent myths surrounding the climate crisis.

Myth #1: “It’s not real, it’s just weather.”

The Truth: Weather is what you see out your window today. Climate is the long-term pattern of weather in a region or globally. A snowstorm or a cold week doesn't disprove climate change. In fact, extreme and unpredictable weather patterns are among the clearest signs that the climate is shifting.

Example: The record-breaking heat waves in Europe and forest fires in Australia and California aren’t isolated freak events—they’re connected to rising global temperatures.

Impact: Confusing weather with climate delays action and misleads the public.

Way Forward: Understand the difference between short-term weather variability and long-term climate trends. Follow trusted science-based platforms like NASA, IPCC, and UNFCCC.

Myth #2: “It’s not caused by humans.”

The Truth: 97% of climate scientists agree that human activities—especially burning fossil fuels and large-scale deforestation—are the primary drivers of climate change. The rapid increase in CO2 since the industrial revolution is not natural.

Example: The correlation between industrial activity and the rise in greenhouse gases is clear and well-documented. Atmospheric CO2 levels have risen from 280 ppm in pre-industrial times to over 420 ppm today.

Impact: Denying human responsibility stalls legislation, policy reform, and mass behaviour change.

Way Forward: Accepting accountability is empowering. It means we also have the power to course-correct through cleaner energy, responsible consumption, and policy advocacy.

Myth #3: “India isn’t contributing much – it’s a Western problem.”

The Truth: While Western nations have historically emitted more carbon, India is now the third largest emitter globally. Moreover, our per capita emissions are rising fast.

Example: India’s coal consumption is growing, and the country faces massive air and water pollution issues due to unregulated industrial growth.

Impact: Playing the blame game prevents accountability and proactive climate leadership.

Way Forward: Acknowledge our role and lead the transition. India has the potential to become a global leader in renewable energy and sustainable practices.

Myth #4: “Technology will fix everything.”

The Truth: Technology is a tool, not a miracle cure. Innovations like carbon capture, electric vehicles, and AI-based sustainability solutions are promising, but they are not substitutes for reducing emissions and changing lifestyles.

Example: Carbon offsetting programs are often misused by corporations to continue emitting while claiming to be net zero.

Impact: Over-reliance on future tech creates complacency and delays urgent action.

Way Forward: Combine innovation with transformation. We must reduce, reuse, and redesign our systems alongside investing in clean tech.

Myth #5: “Sustainable fashion can’t make a difference.”

The Truth: The fashion industry accounts for up to 10% of global carbon emissions and is a major contributor to water pollution and waste. Changing how we produce and consume clothing can significantly impact global emissions.

Example: Switching to organic cotton, reducing overproduction, and eliminating plastic-based fabrics like polyester can reduce the fashion industry’s footprint.

Impact: Dismissing fashion as irrelevant ignores the cultural, economic, and environmental power it holds.

Way Forward: Support circular fashion models, sustainable materials, and ethical labor practices. Every purchase is a vote.

Myth #6: “It’s too late to act.”

The Truth: While the clock is ticking, every fraction of a degree in warming that we avoid makes a massive difference. Limiting global warming to 1.5°C instead of 2°C could save millions of lives, preserve biodiversity, and reduce extreme weather events.

Example: Early action helped restore biodiversity in regions like Costa Rica and reduced emissions in cities adopting green policies like Copenhagen.

Impact: Hopelessness feeds inaction and mental fatigue.

Way Forward: Climate optimism is not naïve—it's necessary. Focus on what can be done today, and push for systemic and individual change.

Myth #7: “Organic or eco labels mean it’s 100% sustainable.”

The Truth: Not all that glitters is green. Many brands engage in greenwashing—using eco-labels without backing them with real action or third-party certifications.

Example: A brand may claim a product is "eco-friendly" because it uses bamboo, but if it's chemically processed and made in a polluting factory, it’s not truly sustainable.

Impact: Misleading claims erode consumer trust and slow down the shift to real sustainability.

Way Forward: Look for transparent communication, certifications like GOTS or Fair Trade, and traceability in the supply chain.

Busting these myths is about reclaiming the narrative. Climate change is not someone else’s problem or a challenge for another time. It’s here, it’s real, and we are part of both the problem and the solution. At UNMODA, we believe that empowered, informed citizens can lead the charge toward a more just, liveable, and sustainable world.

Let’s keep questioning, learning and evolving—together.
